I grew up in the urban, not rural, South. My mother was from New Orleans and we had extended family in Louisiana, many of whom were of Cajun origin so the story was at once familiar and exotic to me. Maybe it was the (ancestral) French influences on my genetics that drew me to France where I have lived most of my life.Lourd writes movingly, beautifully and sometimes shockingly about growing up with a father who was both domineering and painfully vulnerable. Lourd's acceptance of his father's shortcomings both as a father and a man shows a great generosity of spirit. A lovely memoir about a man who was outrageous and inspired his sons to rebel against him and create successful lives of their own in the shadow of their father's many failures and occasional, extravagant successes.Particularly interesting to me were his descriptions of country life and his comments about hunting. As an animal lover who loathes hunting (my idea of a good book about hunting is Flaubert's St Julien l'Hospitalier), I finally understood what motivates men to go out and slaughter wildlife. Well, at least his family ate what he killed. I think as society becomes increasingly urban, rural life is being lost (and open contempt for it being flaunted). Lourd makes you realize what is lost when people lose their connection to nature (as violently as it may be manifested).
I meet Blaine Lourd on the baseball diamonds of West LA Little league about seven years ago. One needs to pay sparse attention to "Double A Little League" since nothing much happens expcept walks and errors; of course until your child comes to the plate; there is much downtime. During that downtime to my surptrise I noticed my youngest precocious son playing football, catch with someone, it was my introduction to Blaine. I thought what a cool guy to take time in between his boy's at bats to throw the ball over and over again to my boy. It was pure delight watching my little guy catch ball after ball. Blaine taking time with a random child, teaching him proper over shoulder catching technique. My son would of been bored silly waiting for his older's brother game to finish, but he was having the best time ever. And I could not tell who was having more fun Blaine or my 5 year old. You could not help but like Blaine, you could just sense something special about him.And Now I know why? Blaine recounts a remarkable story of his family and growing up in Louisiana. I would like to say his book was a great tale, but I can't because BORN ON THE BAYOU is a memoir. A honest to goodness true story that you feel might have been written by Mark Twain.Blaine and I would run into each other occasionaly over the past 7 years. Our kids playing sports (Blaine as coach) or at school, He was always gracious, always polite. And by the way a winner on and off the field; he was clearly a huge success in his business. Blaine took huge chunks of time out of his schedule coaching his kid's teams to victories,. He was clearly super busy, but when coaching, he was undistracted. He would not be interrupted, he focused on the all the kids, not just his children, working with all of them to be winners on and off the field.Blaine and I would wave to each other, trade pleasantries but never much more, he was always the gentleman, always asking about how my boys were doing? Neither of us really knowing one another all that well. Hence I was compelled to read his story. Not often does any of us know, or have an acquaintence that actully writes a memoir. What I didn't expect was to love his story so so much. What I did not expect was such remarkable prose and poetry from Blaine Lourd...BORN ON THE BAYOU is a very special work. A gift to his children who will be able to understand and cheerish his rich family's history. A gift for all who read it. Blaine shares an unbiased story of his childhood. He is candid, funny and honest. He tells the story of three generations of his family history. You will laugh outloud, you will cry and be touched deeply. I think I used my Kindle's function to underline over half of the book, so many memorable quotes. I turned page after page, captivated by his amazing Father (PUFF) , elegant Mother, his remarkable hero of an older brother, his unique sensational granparents, and his colorful younger brother and sister. It is a history of growing up Cajun, growing up as a "Coonass" which from hence forward is a word that will only be used as a compliment in my household. The book is a rich tapestry of the South, the Oil buisness, and breaking from ones roots, while keeping the high values taught, to succeed elswehere. There is love on every page of this book.I now know Blaine Lourd and everything that makes him remarkable. To be Puff's son would only bring forth greatness. What special treat it was to read Blaine's book . Puff would be oh so proud oh his boy.Thank you for sharing this amazing history with all of us Coach Lourd.BW
one of the sorry books that I tried to read. I bought one for my son and sent it to him before trying to reading mine.after I read it a while I called him to thrown the book away, It was not something that I wanted him to read.Under age kids going to mexico to get with a paid call girl. Getting drunk and having sex with a under age girl. And who thinks its ok to get drunk every day . This is by no means a way to be a roll model for your son.I for the life of me can not understand how some one can be proud of this kind of life.I was born and raised in southwest Louisiana and still live here. I'm 77 years old this was not our way of life.....This was not our way of life... {Please do not be fooled by the name of the book] Born on the Bayou.
i usually only read fiction, usually mysteries, but i was familiar with the area represented in the book, having visited the area, and being a huge fan of James Lee Burke!!. This was a terrific book!!----i could not put it down! And i remember the oil boom very well, having been married to someone who worked in the oil fields. Mr. Lourd's descriptions all felt true, and it took me back to a time i have a great fondness for. He certainly knows how to keep the story going, and keep it interesting. I certainly hope Mr. Lourd will continue to write---i look forward to reading more of his work!!
Mr. Lourd paints a picture of the bayou and its people so clearly that you almost feel like you need to swat the mosquitoes and love bugs away, and can almost taste the ice cold beer.Family bonds run deep here in Louisiana and he captures our loyalties very well.He lets us walk into the heart and soul of his family and feel the rites of passage of early adulthood. Fathers and sons bond closely here with nature as the backdrop. I love the way this story flows and the genuineness that he tells it with. Our parents make us who we are and imprint the lessons we learn in early life on our hearts forever.I could listen to this man for days and never get bored.Great job Mr Lourd.
