I mean let's just put this out there right now, if you're not playing 1st edition AD&D or don't have a vested interest in the history of D&D in general, there's no reason to get this. Most retroclones have their own list of spells and classes and specific rulings, and this would probably not exactly "fit," unlike with a lot of other more version-agnostic AD&D books that WOULD work with OSRIC, Swords and Wizardry, Labyrinth Lord, etc.The rules-as-written for 1st edition are a heck of a slog when compared to more recent examples; RPG authors definitely improved on matters of clarity as time went on. It is interesting, though, to note the strong reliance 1st edition still has on the community of wargaming and the presumption generally that anyone reading the book would already be familiar with the hobby of miniature wargaming generally to fill in some of the gaps. One has to come to this with a certain degree of understanding, either from familiarity with later versions of D&D or other types of RPGs, it does not present itself clearly to the first-time gamer (nor was that its intent, for those there was Basic D&D).It was interesting to me as a part of "lonely fun" researching how rules have changed through different versions of D&D. And how many institutions in modern play just simply did not exist back then (like I have heard that Gary Gygax personally hated "critical hits" and indeed they don't show up in any of the core AD&D products).
This book is a classic, an absolute masterpiece, and should be in the library of every author, roleplayer, DM, GM, storyteller, referee, or host, regardless of your preferred system or edition. I use this book no matter what edition of D&D I'm playing. It's advise is universal and covers a broad spectrum of topics from the expected how to play AD&D and advice on specific rules calls, to more general advise on how to make rules calls, how to keep your players immersed in the game, how to be a good host, and even what books you might read for fun and inspiration. This is more than just a game manual. It is a work of art and culture.
As life long D&D player (35 years and counting) I always looked back to the time when The first edition came out. I remember how I worked the summer to save my money to get all the first books. Over the years as I got old the books disappear and 2nd, 3rd editions came out. I played when I could but it seemed to lack something. Finally here comes 4th edition and wow was I disappointed. It was so dumbed down. It made look back to the start. So I searched and found the original Dungeon Masters Guide. The first edition is a work of genius by the Master of the Dungeons himself. In this tome lays the basics of what is the greatest game in role playing. This is rpg Genesis. I am so glad I grabbed it and start playing by the old rules again.
I remember when the Dungeon Master's Guide (DMG) 1st hit the open market. I was 17...it was a long awaited book. For Wizards of the Coast to bring back the 1st edition core books of Advanced D&D is a great moment. To do this in honor of its creator the late E. Gary Gygax (E.G.G.) is amazing and much appreciated. The Dungeon Master's Guide is very high quality. It is well bound and will last far longer then the original publications from the 70's and 80's. It is simply a quality product. The original DMG was the first book of the core books in the series that I bought...It is simply amazing to hold a newly printed copy of this grand ole book in my hands once again. If you used to play the game...back in the day; thumbing through these pages are a welcome stroll down memory lane. It will not disappoint.
The only TRUE version of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. WOTC perverted it into a money making "game"...they turned Chess into Checkers. I wish that were an exaggeration. This is the old balanced, meaningful game written mostly by Gary Gygax.
I bought this because I’m going thru a phase of nostalgia- we were middle class but I got nothing as a kid and was forced to borrow all of my friends volumes to study and covet.
Very happy with this purchase. shipped and received quickly. It was in much better condition than I thought it would be even by the description, I can't stress this enough. It wowed my friends when I brought it to our game by how great the condition was. It's the best looking book on the table. Nothing negative to say about this transaction.
Fantastic reproduction of a classic. I've just hopped onto the OSR bandwagon, and I'm just beginning to comprehend what the hell Gary Gygax meant for Encumberance, Initiative, etc. But, the overall essence of his vision for D&D is evident from the get-go, and it's a privilege to own a piece of the game when it was at its purest. Awesome production values all around, from the leather-like cover to the b&w reprinting. The premium AD&D DMG is truly and essential addition to any RPG fan's collection.
