Really enjoyed this clean book

Such a great read! I love all of the authors work!

I was excited to read Chalon Linton's new historical romance, Escape to Everly Manor. I've enjoyed her books in the past and this one sounded really good!Lizzy and her brother Thomas lose their parents in an accident and their Uncle Cline inherits the estate along with becoming their guardian. He is cruel and unbending, planning to send Thomas to sea and marry Lizzy off to an old man as quickly as possible. Lizzy makes the choice to take Thomas and run---but where will they go? After a daring escape, they find an old abandoned cabin and stop there until Lizzy can make other arrangements. But when she goes into town for food, she meets handsome Mr. Barton who makes an unforgettable impression---on her heart. Though he seems kind and anxious to help, Lizzy doesn't trust him. Yet, when they're found out and her uncle is set to carry out his nefarious plans. Lizzy is torn between love and loyalty and she must make a choice before time runs out.I really enjoyed the character of Lizzy and her growth throughout the book. She faces some really difficult trials and always tries to do what's best. Her selflessness sometimes goes to the extreme, but after losing her parents, her devotion to her brother is understandable. Thomas was cute and stole his scenes, and the supporting cast of servants and other family rounded out the story with an unexpected depth of feeling. (Bethany and Thomas were adorable!) But the best part of the book was Barton, our hero. He has a heart of gold, which he puts on the line again and again as he slowly unravels all of Lizzy's secrets. I loved how tender and sweet he was to both Lizzy and Thomas and his courage at the end. My only complaint was the editing in this book. This publisher is usually quite good, which is why I was so surprised! The editing mistakes definitely took me out of the story and were mostly homonym errors, like using dawned when it should be donned, reigned when it should be reined, too/to, and waiver/waver to mention a few. There were so many of those throughout the entire book, it really was distracting. But the story does overcome the editing errors overall and I thought this was an enjoyable read with all the feels at the end.

This is a romance novel set in 1813 in England. There were many little things in the story that seemed improbable to me. For example, it wasn't until nearly the end that someone questioned why their parents named a cruel uncle as their guardian and left them completely dependent upon him. It's not like Lizzy and Thomas had no friendly adults in their life to look into the matter. Also, everyone acted like it was shocking for a nine-year-old boy to work, but factories (among other places) regularly employed young boys. So I didn't find it very historically accurate. The main characters were nice and meant well, but they didn't always act realistically. Plus Lizzy was pretty useless in a crisis and quite adept at getting into situations where she was helpless and needed to be rescued. Even Barton sometimes acted stupidly when it came to a crisis. For example, he once handed what was obviously a weapon to someone who wanted to use it on him. Still, the author tried to create suspense through violent storms, injuries, and kidnappings. The romance developed over time as trust built between the two. Barton was kind and patient. Lizzy had very little care for her own happiness and was determined to protect Thomas above everything (though her plans didn't do a very good job with that). Lizzy treated her brother like a five-year-old, babying him and acting like he's incapable of handling difficult situations. She rejected Barton in favor of caring for her brother, even though it's clear that she didn't have to make a choice between them. She let Barton kiss and hold her on several occasions but didn't even try to find a way to make a relationship with him work. Frankly, she kept making bad decisions even when better options were available. There was no sex or bad language.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

I really hate it when greedy people take advantage of orphans.Lizzy runs from her family home with her younger brother. He Uncle has taken possession of the estate and is shipping off her brother to serve as a cabin boy on a ship. Lizzy cannot allow that to happen so she plots her escape. What would you do for someone you love? In this case, Lizzy is willing to sacrifice everything to protect her brother. He is all the family that she has left and she cannot let him be put in danger on a ship. Her Uncle is a violent man who has made their life miserable.Their adventure takes them to the small town of Hillcrest. It is there that Lizzy finds protection at Everly Manor. The interactions between Lizzy and Barton are precious. Lizzy has secrets and is not willing to give them up. She fears that she will be forced to return to the care of her Uncle and her brother shipped off to sea. She is not sure who or what she can trust. This leads her into danger.Barton is an honorable and just man. He has always been an advocate for the downtrodden. He wants nothing more than to protect Lizzy and Thomas. Getting Lizzy to trust him is the main battle that he faces. This book is sweet. It is one that I wanted to keep reading and find out if there is a "happy ever after" for the characters. I enjoyed them and the rural setting.Source: I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
