Coleen Moore's doll house is the ultimate doll house that any little girl (or grown woman!) would love to own. It is absolutely amazing, and a lovely venue for such wonderful gifts given to her from celebrities and political figures throughout the world. She did the very best thing for her creation by putting it into a museum so that everyone could enjoy her legacy .
I was born the year Colleen Moore took her Fairy Castle, or, Doll House, on a charity tour to Salt Lake City, Utah (1936). My mother named meafter this famous movie star and met her on the Salt Lake tour. Mother purchased her book, "The Enchanted Castle", for the large sum of $1.00.(Publishers price was 25 cents.) It is autographed on the front page in Colleen's beautiful script-style handwriting, "For Colleen ...... on herbirthday With all good wishes from Colleen Moore." I recently purchased the book from Amazon, "Colleen Moore's Doll House" which she wrote telling the history of the creation of her castle. I enjoyed the book very much but was a little disappointed with the quality of the photos. What elseshould we expect from 1930's photography? HD has spoiled us!
I visited the Chicago museum with a friend and their son, when the school took a day trip in the spring of this year. We were quite impressed with the doll house on display, and were able to 'try' to take pictures, as well as listen to the provided sound track available to visitors regarding the creation and maintenance of the doll house. The book on sale in the store at the museum might be a newer copy, but it was very expensive and didn't look as good as this did, when I found it on line. I bought one for myself, and one for my friend. We are both exceptionally pleased with this book, and it gave even better close up detail than we could see through the glass case at the museum, along with an enjoyable text which further outlined the beginnings and history of the doll house.
I have known about Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle for many years, but have yet to see it in person at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. We had a trip planned for this September, but had to cancel because of illness. Next year for sure.I had planned to purchase this book at the Museum when we visited, but alas that was not to be, so I got it through an Amazon seller.The book itself is a piece of art. Well done, beautiful detailed, close up pictures. More pictures than words, which in a book of this nature, is very important to me. There are a lot of details about the construction, Ms. Moore, and the history of the castle, so this book is very complete and a joy to own or to give as a gift.
A few years ago I went to see the Fairy Castle at Chicago's Science and Industry Museum with my son and granddaughter. It was fantastic and it was hard to pull ourselves away from this beautiful castle. At that time my granddaughter loved fairies. Years later I regretted that I didn't buy the book about the Fairy Castle. I have looked through this book and it is a beautiful. I wrote a card to my granddaughter and presented her with the book. What a special memory of a beautiful day! The book is gorgeous and well worth owning. It is a true treasure.
This is the most delightful book! It is so fascinating to see the detail, love and imagination (not to mention money) that went into creating this Fairy Castle Doll House. I am planning on traveling to Chicago to see it for myself (when I get enough frequent flyer miles) and I had never even heard of it before reading this book. I plan on buying several more copies to give as gifts. I am considered middle aged but this book brought back every little girl's fantasy I ever had about a fairy castle.
My mother gave me a copy of this book when it first came out in 1975. It was damaged in a flood and I searched for a long time for this book. It has been out of print for decades. If you love miniatures and dollhouses, Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle is the Ultimate not to be copied again piece. It's a good read too - the history of the project, the donations from all around the world.
Whats not to love with this book.
