The previous reviewer was correct. I cannot get any of the examples to work either.It looks like they were build based on a (pre-release) "android-N" package which isn'tavailable anymore. Author/publisher if you are out there, please correct me if I'mwrong and/or offer a solution. I would NOT recommend this book otherwise andsuggest looking somewhere else.
I have read a reasonably large number of instructional and technical books, and this one is not very good. It is rather disjointed and the code exercises have been poorly edited. There are a number of places where you will be told to modify a program from a previous exercise only to find that the modifications do not work properly. Typically, when I took a close look at the developer docs it would turn out to be an issue of someone not completely updating every exercise in a chain of exercises.
I would like to ask the people who gave 5 star reviews to elaborate on what made this book so great. So far the examples are either obsolete or incomplete. So far the best thing this book has shown me is how to download the software... You don't need to buy this book in order to download Android Studio and Java JDK 8.I am going to muddle my way though this book to see if it gets any better and if I am wrong I will come back and either change my review or add to it.This shouldn't be a reflection of Wrox as I have used a few of their books and had a large amount of success leaning the subject matter... this book is the exception.
There are sufficient differences between the current release of the IDE and SDK vs. what are used in the book to cause numerous compile and run time errors when doing the "TRY IT OUT" exercises. While there is some learning benefit to working through these errors, that benefit is to small to warrant the time and frustration. I'm getting much quicker progress since tossing the book and simply winging it with the IDE.
This book has many problems in following the code. There are many typos and missing instructions and I spend more time debugging the code than I do actually learning from the book.
I bought it based on recommendations but for previous editions, this edition is full of errors and has not been revised after it has been updated
